Popcorn texture was sprayed on ceilings across Florida for decades because it was fast and hid imperfect drywall. Today it traps dust, is nearly impossible to clean or patch, and makes rooms feel lower and darker. Removing it is one of the highest-impact updates a home can get.
One note on older homes: ceilings textured before the early 1980s can contain asbestos. If your home dates from that era, have a sample tested before anyone scrapes it. Most homes in Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes and New Tampa were built well after that and do not have this concern.
The process starts with containment. Floors, furniture, cabinets and vents are sealed in plastic. The texture is misted with water and scraped off, which keeps the dust down. Once the ceiling is bare, the drywall underneath almost always needs repair: nail pops, seams and small gouges are patched and the whole surface is skim-coated and sanded.
Then comes the new texture. Smooth ceilings are the most modern look and the most work. Knockdown and orange peel textures match what most newer Florida homes already have and hide minor imperfections. After the texture dries, the ceiling is primed and painted with a flat ceiling paint.
Plan on one to two days per room, and consider pairing the job with an interior repaint so walls and ceilings are finished together. Zumo Painting & Renovations quotes popcorn removal per room, with texture, paint and cleanup included in the written estimate.
